Moore Advocacy

Moore On Health™  strongly believes in supporting the nursing profession community through advocacy and membership with a nursing organization. No matter what path your nursing career has taken you (e.g. Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner or Nurse Educator) having an active membership with a nursing organization designed to support and perpetuate the profession is imperative and is in many ways your responsibility.  Nursing organizations with the infrastructure to inform, innovate, advocate and strengthen healthcare and profession can further enhance your personal career skill set and path while providing an option for networking with others who shares your professional commitment.

March 2020 – In the heart of Washington D.C.’s downtown, the Grand Hyatt Washington Moore On Health (MOH) along with approximately 200 NPs attended the AANP Annual Health Policy Conference. This is the leading policy conference for NPs from across the country to collectively discuss the issues, meet with elected representatives or their staff, and advocated for the Nurse Practitioner (NP) Role!

In addition, attendees heard from an impressive group of speakers, which included leaders in health care, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Capitol Hill staff.

The conference provided opportunities to engage with other NP advocates from across the United States to discuss, strategize, review ways data needed to strengthen our profession, identify barriers to practice, and increase sustainable and equitable access to care.

The highlight and keynote speaker was Donna Brazile, veteran Democratic political strategist, syndicated columnist and Fox News contributor.

Donna Brazile, a campaign staffer, presidential campaign manager and Democratic party official, is an expert in political strategy. She tapped into her Washington circles and provided about the upcoming 2020 election. Author of the best-selling memoir “Cooking with Grease: Stirring the Pots in American Politics,” her witty style and innovative political strategies have earned her the respect of colleagues as well as adversaries.

She was honored to become the first African American to manage a presidential bid, leading Al Gore’s campaign in 2000. Her analysis of today’s issues and unique take on the policy issues in Congress led her to be named one of the 100 Most Powerful Women by Washingtonian, Top 50 Women in America by Essence and O Power List remarkable visionary by The Oprah Magazine. Brazile is an adjunct professor at Georgetown University, a syndicated newspaper and magazine columnist and an on-air contributor at Fox News. She is also the founder of Brazile & Associates LLC, a general consulting, grassroots advocacy and training firm based in Washington D.C.

A native of New Orleans, Brazile continues to work toward the full recovery of the city, and she encourages young people of all backgrounds to vote and to strengthen the system from within by running for public office. Since 2000, she has appeared at more than a hundred higher education institutions across the country, speaking to young people about diversity and issues in our current political system.

As the conference came to a close on March 10, 2020, attendees paid close attention to the news about Covid-19. It was announced on March 11,2020 — WHO Declares COVID-19 a Pandemic.

February 25 – 26, 2017 – Moore On Health had the pleasure to represent the California Association for Nurse Practitioner – Health Policy Practice Committee and attended the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments (ANHE)| Environmental Health and Nursing Workshop in Sacramento, California.

To date, federal efforts to monitor and regulate chemicals and chemical safety have not been effective. In the United States, there are over 80,000 chemicals in our environment and the Environmental Working Group estimates the number to be closer to 100,000. http://envirn.org/safer-chemicals/

Environmental health is the science and practice of preventing human injury and illness and promoting well-being by:

  • Identifying and evaluating environmental sources and hazardous agents and
  • Limiting exposures to hazardous physical, chemical, and biological agents in air, water, soil, food, and other environmental media or settings that may adversely affect human health. http://www.neha.org

Studies on animals and humans have shown that some PBBs and PBDEs can act as endocrine system disruptors and also tend to deposit in human adipose tissue (ATSDR 2004; Birnbaum and Staskal 2004; DHHS 2011; He and others 2006).

Some of the chemicals that comprise frack fluid are highly toxic and cancer causing, like Benzene, Toluene, 2-butoxyethanol (a main ingredient to anti-freeze and oil dispersants), and heavy metals. The Endocrine Disruptor Exchange (TEDX) identified 353 chemicals used in fracking, many of which can cause cancer and other serious health, even in small doses.

2015 AANP Specialty & Leadership Conference

Nurse Practitioners (NPs) represent a principal group of advanced-practice nurses delivering primary care in the United States. Approximately 8 percent of the healthcare workforce are NPs who serve four distinct roles: nurse anesthetists, nurse-midwives, clinical nurse specialists (nurses with advanced knowledge and skills in the care of special patient populations based primarily in acute care settings), and nurse practitioners. With such a dynamic profession it is imperative for NPs to remain aware of the new trends happening in the health care and medical arenas.

One way to stay relevant is by attending conferences designed to support our profession, to provide opportunities for NPs to network and to increase our knowledge within areas of interest. This year I plan to increase the value of my conference participation, not only by attending, but also by presenting and/or volunteering as well. The following list is both what I perceive as key benefits for attending a conference as well as key elements to ensure the conference attendee has a great experience.

Standing alongside MargaretAFitzgerald, DNP, FNP-BC, NP-C, FAANP, CSP, FAAN, DCC
Left to Right – Margaret A. Fitzgerald and Charlotte A. Gullap-Moore
  • Learn new techniques, technologies by listening to experts and colleagues.
  • Gain CME hours
  • Connect with valuable resources relevant to your business or career – benchmark how the other practice modalities measure against your own.
  • Grow your professional network. Face-to-Face time – Talk one-on-one with information providers (vendors and publishers).
  • Participate in the conference by presenting, volunteering, teaching, speaking, taking part in a panel discussion or being a member of committee.

When you make the investment of both time and money you return to the workplace with a renewed sense of purpose, armed with new knowledge and tools as well as valuable new contacts that can turn into long-term relationships.

These benefits will help you grow personally and more importantly professionally.
